Each song moves forward calmly and controlled, sometimes a bit of a jam session, sometimes a huge mood shift, sometimes a trance-like elongation of time. If I must find a complaint... "II" is a sophomore album from Polish instrumental group ARRM (featuring members of Thaw, Furia). It contains 4 brand new tracks that expand band's psychedelic sound, merging influences as diverse as spiritual jazz and modern electronic music.

"Of course there are some similarities with our debut album but we're keen on trying new things, including new instruments such as straight bass," admits Artur Rumiński (guitar). "Majority of our new music is the outcome of improv sessions we held in our rehearsal space. After coming up with some riff ideas we built more complex musical structures and played around with them until we decided that we reached our common goal," he adds.

"II" took 2 years to make, mainly due musicians' other commitments. "I wouldn't call ARRM a typical rockband and that's mainly due to the way our music evolves outside of what you could call a traditional song structure. We tend to go with the flow, give each note it's due. It requires patience and time. It's a long journey," Rumiński explains.

"In terms of influences, we focused mainly on spiritual jazz from the 70s. I would also add Popol Vuh, folk, afrobeat and of course drone, ambient, dub. We filtered this through our sensitivity and the outcome of this approach can be heard on 'II'," he says. If you're surprised by this wide range of musical genres then you need to learn that ARRM don't limit their live appearances to your typical rock shows. "We play various festivals and venues: starting from metal ones up to psychedelic and noise-focused," Rumiński admits.

The first track is a bit of an outlier, perhaps connecting back to earlier albums where jazz foundations lead the way, before going all out berserk with the beats, beats, and beats. Bass and electronics are now the mainstays over the hip-hop influenced rhythms. But the horns are still layered back in with style. I initially passed this over, but the Szlam / Ścieki tracks blew my socks off and in desperation for more, I was led back to this. I can't wait to see where Błoto go next. rvss.eel

There is a lot of fun on Hamza, and some of their heaviest moments that I am aware of. In fact this feels heavier and heavier each time I listen to it. I only wish more of that was incorporated into the most mellow songs on here, which, unlike in other releases, don't hold onto energy as well. But hey, I'm being picky and there are only two of those and I rarely know what I'm talking about! This is Lonker See so you know it's worth it. rvss.eel
